Long ago and far away. And unforgettable. July 2005

Lots of people are far more diligent than I am about recording, critiquing, and sharing the various things they read, watched, litened to etc. over the previous year. I thank them for their service and enjoy reading their posts and, sometimes, following some of their recommendations.

Having just updated my pretentiously named Consumption Log, a quick proofreading skim surfaced these points.

  • The original Thomas Crown Affair: ineffably cool.
  • Couldn’t stand either The Studio or Plur1bus, from Apple TV, but very much OK with the other offerings I watched.
  • Some things I simply cannot remember, not at all.
  • Just One Look, on Netflix, a Polish “Harlana Cobana”, was rather good.
  • Best books, a tie between Civilisations, by Laurent Binet, and Caledonian Road, by Andrew O’Hagan. Both sprawl all over the place in a very satisfying manner, and Civilisations made me realise how little I really know of European history.
  • Train Dreams was a surprisingly lovely film, on Netflix.
