That picture’s a bit hard to read. Mandevilla seedlings, lying on the ground, their roots to the right. No pot, note. What happened? I can’t be sure, but a few times I’ve gone out onto the terrace and found a couple of big black crows poking about in the pots. they generally take off when I arrive and lurk on the forest of TV aerials. And pots that I swear were stable even in the howling winds have somehow ended up toppled. I can only assume that the crows were playing with these seedlings and somehow pulled them out of their pot.
The bigger mystery? Where’s the pot? I swear, I looked all over and there’s not a sign of it. Now, what would a crow want with a perfectly ordinary small black plastic plant pot?

There’s a story in the NYT yesterday about how crows can distinguish individual people’s faces (as if this was news) and each others. So… presumably one of them wished to rob another’s food cache incognito.
I had a pet one as a boy and he could certainly recognise individuals and also changed his behaviour when he was aware of being watched (who me, near a supply of hidden food?). They use tools. So… disguise is only a matter of time :-)
So if I see a pot with wings, I’ll know what’s going on. hanks for the tip-off. I also have no idea why this “Crows are surprisingly smart” thing keeps going. I mean, who’s surprised? Not anyone who has ever paid crows any attention.
There was even some Tedster making heavy weather of how smart cros were a while back.
