European Cities Do Away with Traffic Signs.

“The many rules strip us of the most important thing: the ability to be considerate. We’re losing our capacity for socially responsible behavior,” says Dutch traffic guru Hans Monderman, one of the project’s co-founders. “The greater the number of prescriptions, the more people’s sense of personal responsibility dwindles.”

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I can’t wait for them to try that here.

One…way…streets…?

When an eighteen-wheeler meet a Mini Cooper a-comin’ thro’ the rye on TinyMedievalStrasse, whose sense of personal responsibility dwindles to the point of backing up a quarter-kilometer to let the better man pass?

Just wonderin’.

Simple. concerned citizens would long before have indicated to the driver of the 18-wheeter, by means of nods, waves and other interpersonal communications, that he didn’t ought to be heading towards Tiny Medieval Strasse.

I suspect the main form of interpersonal communication that would transpire in such a hypothetical would involve clenching the right fist, holding the right forearm straight up, at right angles to the right upper arm, and slapping the left hand forcefully into the inside part of the right elbow.
